Introducing Jacob Gregory aka Lyrical Instinct

Editors note: I was recently sent a clip of a young rapper out in Broome named Jacob Gregory aka Lyrical Instinct. I was fairly impressed with his video so I got in touch and had a quick yarn with him. He’s doing his HSC at the moment but dreams of one day making it big in the rap game, and I thought we could help him get started by letting him introduce himself to you mob and including his video for you to check out.

My name is Jacob Hamaguchi (Gregory), I’m from Broome, Western Australia. I was born and raised in Broome all my life and never really moved. The only other places that I’ve ever been to are Perth and Geraldton.

I started listening to a whole lot of rap music when I was about eleven or twelve and have been listening to it ever since then, because I loved the feeling and how it could be used as a tool for expression. Because when I was younger, I was going through hard times mainly in school with the work and other kids around me. I was just stressing and overthinking a lot. I actually felt like I was alone in the world, because I was too shy to talk to people and always worried about being rejected.

But I was always inspired by music, it was my only way of escape from everything. I remember growing up with my dad, he always had a guitar, which was probably the first instrument I ever attempted to play. My dad would teach me how to play some songs I really liked and I would mess around with it on the amp a lot. But whenever I’m having a bad day, I always put music on to motivate myself to push through everything. Then I started writing my own lyrics down and expressing myself instead of overthink everything.

But I started performing the songs I made and performed them in school a few of times and the feeling of being on stage for me was so awesome that I just kept making more songs to express myself and just performed wherever I could. I love being on stage just rapping my songs to people and hopefully helping them as well with what I write. Because most of my songs are focused on building self-esteem and I aim to have a confident impact on people whenever they listen to my songs, because I know how bad you can get when you overthink things and doubt yourself about your capabilities a lot.

Ever since then I’ve been writing more and more lyrics and have been getting better along the way. Now I’m making songs and aspire to become a rapper so I can travel the world, support my family and help people who are going through the same things.
